So you’re thinking about spending a few days in Seattle? Home of Grunge, birthplace of Starbucks, city of flying fish. Yep, flying fish, but more on that later. If you need a few suggestions for some activities that’ll give you the full Seattle experience, then you’re in luck. Below you’ll find our five favorite things to do in Seattle, in no particular order…
The Space Needle
400 Broad St,
Seattle, WA 98109
We’re kicking things off with an absolute classic – the Space Needle. Cliché? Maybe. But let’s be real, can you even say you’ve been to Seattle if you didn’t set foot in its iconic 605-foot-tall structure?
Standing majestically in the heart of Seattle, it is quite literally the city’s crown jewel. The view from the observation deck is mind-boggling. The city, the sea, and mountains – all in one 360-degree view. Don’t forget to grab a bite or enjoy a cocktail at the revolving SkyCity restaurant. The food is delectable, but the views are what truly steal the show. Because let’s face it, it’s why your up there in the first place!
Is it family friendly?
Of course! Visiting the space needle would make a perfect day trip for the family!
Pike Place Market
1st Avenue to Western Avenue
Pike Place Market is Seattle’s vibrant, bustling hub of deliciousness. You haven’t fully experienced Seattle until you’ve seen a fishmonger toss a salmon across the room. And by the way, that’s what I meant by “flying fish” earlier. It’s a tradition, you don’t want to miss it! (You can actually have fresh caught salmon shipped right to your door, just ask the fishmonger and they’ll hook you up!)
Beyond seafood, the market is a riot of colors and flavors, with vendors selling everything from flowers to handcrafted jewelry, artwork, and antiques. And oh, the food! The pastries at Piroshky Piroshky, the clam chowder at Pike Place Chowder – you’ll be drooling before you know it.
And don’t forget the first-ever Starbucks store – a must-visit for all the caffeine addicts out there. It’s not much to look at from the outside, but there’s usually a line to get in, so try and get there early!
Is it family friendly?
Absolutely! You could spend pretty much the whole day here wandering around the shops and restaurants with the family.
Ferry Ride to Bainbridge Island
801 Alaskan Way Pier 52
Seattle, WA 98104
The ferry ride from Seattle to Bainbridge Island is a perfect getaway from the city’s hustle and bustle. The ride provides stellar views of the Seattle skyline, and once you’re on the island, it’s an entirely different world.
Spend the day exploring local shops, art galleries, and restaurants. The Bloedel Reserve on the island is a serene, beautiful public garden – an absolute treat for the nature-lovers.
Is it family friendly?
Yes! This is another perfect way to spend the day with the family and soak in some nature!
Seattle Underground Tour
614 1st Ave,
Seattle, WA 98104
Now, this is where things get really interesting. The Seattle Underground tour takes you beneath the city streets to the Seattle of the 19th century. The city was rebuilt on top of itself after the Great Fire of 1889, and this tour is your ticket to that buried history.
The tour itself is pretty rugged. There are several flights of stairs, uneven terrain and spotty lighting. So make sure you dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Guides will regale you with tales of the city’s wild past – complete with scandals and shootouts. It’s like stepping into a time machine – definitely a hidden gem!
Is it family friendly?
Yes it is! It’s like an adventure that your whole family can be apart of!
Chihuly Garden and Glass
305 Harrison St,
Seattle, WA 98109
Chihuly Garden and Glass showcases the studio glass of Dale Chihuly. The exhibition features a glasshouse, a theater, and a lush garden dotted with unique glass sculptures.
The blend of nature and art is simply surreal. It’s like stepping into a different universe, and it’s guaranteed to leave you awe-struck. Trust me, the Instagram pics alone will be worth it!
If you need to recharge, stop by The Bar for a tasty libation or some small plates. Plus, It’s the only place in the world to see over 25 of Dale Chihuly’s personal collections, which are on display throughout the space. The centerpiece of The Bar is an illuminated installation of 36 signature Chihuly Drawings, creating a uniquely art-centric dining experience.
Is it family friendly?
For sure! The kids will be amazed by all the glass artwork, trust me.
